Public Address THE SOUNDS OF MUSIC
"I can't compose or play music; I'm not that fortunate. But I can write and I can talk and sometimes when I'm doing either of these things I realise that I've written a sentence or uttered a thought that I didn't absolutely know I had in me... until I saw it on the page or heard myself say it. That has to be the way with songwriters and composers!" (Christopher Hitchens)

MUSIC FROM THE COUNTER CULTURE

Public Address Extended Special MUSIC FROM THE COUNTER CULTURE
Originating in the 1960s, the counter-culture movement is a sub-culture that arose in several countries and which opposed many of the modern societal values, all the while seeking new ways of living in society. For many of its adherents, the movement meant the rejection of society’s codes or norms through the consumption of mind-altering substances, the rejection of dominant religious morality, the search for pleasure, and political activism. Fuelled by disillusionment and desires, the movement subsequently gave birth to the Hippie movement, itself characterised by a renewed interest in religion and spirituality (mainly from Asia, such as Buddhism), and strong desires to reform society.
The movement rejected capitalistic values, for their negative impact on the environment, relationships between people, and the economy. The movement opposed wars and the deleterious foreign affair policies of the United States. It grew quickly in many countries, perhaps because it managed to articulate new codes free from capitalistic imperatives that disillusioned many. The counter-culture movement led to the development of a rich palette of artistic trends, such as Rock and Roll and electronic music forms from artists such as Frank Zappa, Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd all of whom feature in this programme. The movement disseminated a set of values that questioned the morals of Western society as a whole, including the sexual revolution, the invention of contraceptives, and feminism, and encouraged its adherents to organise themselves in self-managed communities, detached from the consumerist logic.

Public Address VALENTINE SPECIAL
Love is often regarded as different from mere needs driven by sexual desire or lust. Romantic love generally involves a mix of emotional and sexual desire. There is often, initially, more emphasis on the emotions than on physical pleasure.
Romantic love can be returned or unrequited. In the former case the mutual expressions of love can lead to marriage or to the establishment of a permanent relationship, which in most cases will include passionate sexual love. Where the love is one-sided (unrequited) damage to the self esteem and/or the psychological welfare of the spurned lover can result.
One aspect of romantic love is the randomness of the encounters which lead to love. Romantic love became a recognised passion in the Middle Ages, when in some cases insurmountable barriers of morality or convention separated the lovers. The effect of physical attraction and impossibility of intimacy resulted in an excessive regard of the beloved as extremely precious. Winning the love, or at least the attention, of the beloved, motivated great efforts of many kinds, such as in poetry and song.
To coincide with the day of celebration for romantic love - Valentines Day - here is a two-hour special edition of Public Address featuring songs and music of love interspersed by spoken word renditions.
